Norm Gets Dirty

This past Saturday was NBC24 night at Attica Raceway Park.

The crowd was outstanding!  (Thanks to all those who came out!).

And to be honest, I've been to a lot of races this year...and I can say that some of the action at Attica Saturday night was some of the best I've seen this year.  (I hope to have video highlights up on the web for all to see within the next day or two).

Something interesting about Attica is that the current track Promoter, John Bores, is also a racer himself!

John drives a dirt late model, and in addition to helping with everything from track prep to concessions when the track is up and running, he also straps into his race car and goes door to door with the other drivers.

It was a pleasant surprise Saturday when I was approached by the Director for Operations at Attica, Rex LeJune, and asked if I would be interested in taking some "hot laps" in John's car before the racing got underway.

Being a racing nut, and a wannabe racer myself, I couldn't say no.

Did some searching around the pits for a fire suit that would fit...and we eventually found one.  Once the "real" drivers completed their practice laps, they stuffed me into John's car, (trust me, tight fit)...gave me some quick instructions on how to start...get rolling...and stop...and turned me loose on the banked 3/8 mile dirt that is Attica Raceway Park.

We have video evidence!  Track announcer Brian Liskai has the call:

Needless to say, it was a great thrill...and while I already respect what these guys can do with these extremely powerful, highly specialized machines, those few laps made that respect grow even more.

Thanks to John Bores and the rest of the Attica crew for giving me the opportunity.  It seemed that the fans got a real kick out of seeing me spin out!

Additionally, I'm in a "celebrity" (and I use that term loosely) charity race next month at Oakshade Raceway.  Our starting positions will be determined by donations in our name to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

I "Passed the Helmet" through the crowd and they came through for me.  Over $520 donated to this great cause!

Now I have 520 car owners to make happy next month at Oakshade!  Thanks to all that donated!
