TOLEDO -- As the super storm named Sandy heads back out into the Atlantic, residents across the eastern seaboard are in desperate need of help. With several blood drives being called off due to the storm, donors across the country are being asked to help the recovery effort.

The American Red Cross says they expect the already short blood and platelet supply to worsen as Sandy heads out to sea. The organization is moving blood products to affected areas and is asking people not in the path of the storm to donate blood to offset their shortage.

The final day of a community blood drive is being held at the University of Toledo's Savage Hall Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Students from UT and Bowling Green State University, along with all local residents, are urged to attend the 'Rivals on the Field, Teammates in the Community' relief effort. Donors will receive a free t-shirt.

Donations can always be made at the Red Cross' blood donation center on Executive Parkway in Toledo. The office will be open from 10:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. You can call 1-800-RED-CROSS to find another donation center near you.
