TOLEDO -- A rare sight in the city was spotted outside WNWO studios Friday afternoon.
A Bald Eagle was spotted by WNWO sales staff perched high atop a nearby tree. This video was captured by WNWO News Photographer Eric Wildstein and Multimedia Journalist Michael Melchiorre around 5pm. The eagle sat in the tree for about an hour before flying away.
According to the Ohio Department of Wildlife (ODNR), a strong number of Bald Eagles live in the marsh along western Lake Erie. The eagle prefers to live in a “secluded home site” within 2-miles of a body of water with plenty of fish to eat.
In 1973, the Bald Eagle had been listed on the federal endangered species list and was nearly existent. As of recent, the national symbol of the United States has made a comeback. The Bald Eagle was removed from the federal endangered species list in 2007.
Ohio changed the state status of the Bald Eagle from endangered to threatened in 2008. In August of 2012, the Bald Eagle was taken of the Ohio threatened list by ODNR.
