It looks like there won’t be a panic over pumpkins this fall.
Experts say the crop has been mostly spared from the summer drought that gripped half of the nation.
Purdue University experts say Indiana's pumpkin crop has held up pretty well despite drought conditions in the Midwest.
Purdue Extension plant pathologist Dan Engel says pumpkins germinated properly despite fears they would not, and the dryness protected them from many of the diseases that hurt them in wetter years.
Engel says when picking a pumpkin look for a full green stem. The color is a key indicator that the pumpkin is healthy and fresh. Bad pumpkins will have thin and brown stems.
