(AP) -- COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - State officials say southern Ohio hemlock trees infested with a deadly bug with be cut down and burned this month to help keep the insects from spreading.
The insects, called hemlock woolly adelgids, were first found in southern Meigs County in December. The Columbus Dispatch reports the insects have been spotted on a total of eight trees.
An Ohio Department of Agriculture inspection administrator says surveyors will do more searching for infested trees starting next week. The bugs can kill hemlock trees within a few years by feeding on nutrients at the bottom of their needles. The newspaper says they've been found in 18 Eastern states and have been especially damaging in warmer, Southern states.
