UT senior Courtney Ingersoll reacts after hitting a go-ahead three pointer.
SAVAGE ARENA -- "You don't beat a team as quality coached and as talented as Toledo if you only make on field goal in the last five minutes."
That's BGSU head coach Curt Miller, after his Falcons sqaundered a 13 point half time lead and fell to the Toledo Rockets for the third straight time in the regular season,52-50.
With just over a minute left in the game Courtney Ingersoll came off a screen and buried a three pointer from the top of the key, her only field goal of the game, and gave UT their first lead of the game since 2-0 in the opening minutes. For the senior, the win was an emotional one.
"To come here and have a big game like this against BG...It's the greatest feeling ever to win at home against them," Ingersoll said.
Bowling Green dominated the first half, thanks in large part to Chrissy Steffen. The junior was simply on fire, hitting four three pointers and scoring 16 points in the first 20 minutes, the Falcons looked well on their way to their 11th MAC victory of the season.
Things quickly changed in the second half. Toledo scored the first eight points, and utilized their inside game by feeding junior Yolanda Richardson in the post. The Start alum finished with 10 points and six boards.
BG, despite struggling from long range, maintained the lead by going to sophomore Alexis Rogers, who finished with 17. But the Rockets defense clamped down in the final two minutes, outscoring the Falcons 8-0 to finish off thecomeback.
"I'm very proud of our players for keeping focused and staying true to the end," said UT head coach Tricia Cullop.
As for Steffen, she scored only four points in the second half and was forced into a hail mary-type shot in the closing seconds.
"They're a great team and it's always been a close game and hopefully we can pull it out next time."
Miller had been calling this game a 'win-win situation' all week. Despite the loss, BG is still on track to win the MAC regular season title if they win out. He considered the Rockets the favorite heading into the game.
"When you watch everyone's A-Game on tape, Toledo's really talented, but we proved to ourselves we'll go toe-to-toe with them and we threw a lot of haymakers tonight, we just never knocked them out," said Miller, who also praised the University for all the well wishes they gave him while he was recovering from a mild stroke.
The attendance of 5,131 was the 10th largest crowd in school history.
Before the game, former Toledo great, Dana Drew-Shaw had her #11 jersey retired. Drew-Shaw led UT to three NCAA appearances in the early 1990s and is the school's all-time leader in career assists.
