COLUMBUS -- The Northview Wildcats hockey team came up short defending their 2012 state title, as Shaker Heights defeated the Cats 3-1 in the championship game Saturday at Nationwide Arena.

Northview trailed 1-0 early in the first period, but Nick LaPlante was able to tie it up at one all with a power play goal a few minutes later in the first period. Shaker Heights then scored late in the first period and never looked back. Zander Pryor and Kooper Carter assisted on LaPlante's goal. Cats' goalie David Marsh finished with 20 saves.

Shaker Heights captured its fourth state championship and first since 2001.
