DETROIT, MI -- After 280 days, the Detroit Red Wings were back playing in front of their home crowd at the Joe Louis Arena Tuesday. 20,066 fans packed the house for the 72nd consecutive sellout game at The Joe.
Before the game, the Red Wings paid tribute to 15-year veteran Tomas Holmstrom who officially retired from hockey earlier that day. Holmstrom played 1,026 games and finished with 530 points and 243 goals. Not a bad career for the 257th overall pick in the 1994 draft.
After Holmstrom dropped the first puck for the ceremonial faceoff, the Red Wings didn't give the packed house much else to celebrate as the Dallas Stars defeated Detroit 2-1 at Joe Louis Arena.
Red Wings coach Mike Babcock thought his players looked like they were out of gas and probably were since Red Wings were playing for the third time in the first four days of the new season.
"You play three games in four nights with five days of training camp and it's a lot different than having five weeks of training camp and playing three in four nights," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "best guys we had were the ones who have been playing in the AHL. Aside from that, we really didn't have much zip in us."
The Red Wings will have a chance to get back on the winning track as they host the Minnesota Wild Friday, January 25th at the Joe Louis Arena.
