The Arlington girls basketball team are Division IV state champions.
Just like they did in football, the Whitmer boys basketball team is headed to state.
The Panthers defeated Medina 51-39 on Saturday night in Akron to clinch their spot in the final four. Nigel Hayes led with 17, while Leroy Alexander added 11 and Chris Wormley had nine. Both Hayes and Alexander had dunks that brought the Panthers faithful to their feet.
The Panthers will face Lakewood St. Edward on Friday at 5:15pm. If that matchup sounds familiar, it's because St. Edward knocked off the Whitmer football team in the state semifinal in 2010.
In Division II, Sandusky Perkins had their dream season come to an end, thanks to Reggie McAdams and the Elida Bulldogs. McAdams poured in a game high 25 pionts to lead his team to a 63-53 victory. Junior Brandon Smith had 24 and sophomore Nic Williams had 17 to lead the Pirates.
In the Division IV girls final, the Arlington Red Devils won their first state championship with a dominating 52-37 win over Berlin Hiland. Dani Heaster led with 13 points, while Alivia Recker and Joy Reamsnyder added 11 and Amelia Recker put in 10 while pulling down 10 boards.
"I can't even explain how exciting it is. A whole bunch of emotions, all good ones of course, just kind of flowing through me right now...it's pretty awesome," Amelia Recker said.
"This feeling is unbelieveable...I'm on cloud nine right now," said Arlington head coach Seth Newlove.
Things may get even better for the small town as the boys team plays in the state semifinal Thursday at 2pm, also against Hiland.
Finally, speaking of state champions, the Northview hockey team celebrated their first title in school history with a parade through the streets of Sylvania on Saturday morning.
