They weren't supposed to beat Rogers in the sectional finals last Friday night, but they did.

They weren't supposed to beat Central Catholic in Thursday night's district semi-final, but they did.

The Southview Cougars, who had a sub-.500 record in the regular season, have knocked off two of the best boy's basketball teams in northwest Ohio in consecutive games.

The Irish the latest victim, falling 49-43 at Savage Arena.

"We only had eight or ten games in the regular season where we had our top five or six kids," said Southview coach Marc Jump.  "Our kids battled but you've got to have all the pieces.  If you've got all the pieces, I think we're playing pretty well."

The Cougars got a big game from senior's Brandon Sinram and Allen Gant.

Sinram was 3-of-6 from three point range and finished with 11 points.  Gant led Southview with 15 points including a three-point bank shot and a lay-up with 36-seconds remaining that help seal the win.

"We felt like we had nothing to lose," said Gant.  "We were the underdogs coming in and it's a good feeling to get this win."

Southview will face Whitmer in Saturday's district final, as the Panthers beat St. John's in the opener at Savage, 43-38.

Whitmer trailed by four at the half but senior Leroy Alexander sparked a 9-0 run to start the second half.  The future Nebraska football player scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half.

"We've been waiting to play them again," said Alexander.  "We knew we'd play them again.  Now, we're looking forward to playing [Southview]."

St. John's would answer in the form of future Ohio State basketball player, Marc Loving.

Loving would put the Titans back out in front after knocking down a three pointer and then slicing through the lane for a reverse lay-up.  Loving finished with 10 points.

But Whitmer's Nigel Hayes would outshine his rival.

Hayes attacked the basket in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 18 points.

"It's always a good feeling to beat a great team," said Hayes.  "But we're just trying to stay level-headed and humble."

The Panthers and Cougars will meet in the district final on Saturday at Savage Arena at 7:00.
