Matt Campbell was hired as the head football coach at the University of Toledo on December 12, 2011.
In a report by CBSsports.com, University of Toledo football coach Matt Campbell is the worst-hire of the 26 new Division I football coaches this off-season.
The report, which includes a photo of Campbell and a list of his accomplishments, was a culmination of ballots from nine of CBSsports.com's college football writers.
At 32-years-old, Campbell is the youngest head coach in the FBS.
However, there were no negative comments to support the ranking.
Of the nine writers, two put Campbell last and one had him as high as 15th.
Campbell was promoted from UT's offensive coordinator to head coach after Tim Beckman left for Illinois in December.
Beckman does not appear in the list of the worst-11 hires.
Under Campbell's direction last season,the Rocket offense was first in the MAC and among the top-10 in the nation, in a number of categories.
He was also named one of 2011's 'top recruiters' by Scout.com.
"It's not necessarily that he's the worst hire," said Brett McMurphy one of the writer's of the piece. "Being from the Mid American Conference, a lot of folks quite honestly don't know about Toledo and maybe that's why he was rated that low."
McMurphy admits their rankings are pure speculation.
"We're not going to know for three or four years if Matt's the worst hire or the best hire."
After one game as acting head coach, Campbell's off to a good start.
He's 1-0 with a Military Bowl victory under his belt and the future looks bright with the top-ranked recruiting class in the MAC.
Our attempts to contact coach Campbell on Monday night went unanswered but we're pretty sure we know what he thinks of this pre-season poll.
