The UT women's basketball team returned to the hard wood on Sunday with a season opening home win over Dayton.

Toledo opened the game on a 10-0 run and led by 18 at half en route to a 61-51 victory. The back court led the way as Andola Dortch and Naama Shafir both scored in double figures.

"This game...gave us the confidence [to say] that 'hey, we can do something special this year'," said Shafir, who finished with 16 points, 5 assists and four steals. Dortch led the team in scoring with 17, she also had seven rebounds, four steals and was 3-6 from long range.

Dayton came into Savage Arena fresh off a convincing victory over Bowling Green on Friday. Head coach Tricia Cullop anticipated a tough test. Last year the Rockets fell in Dayton 102-69.

"This is a great win against a very good team...they proved thereselves last game against a very storied program [BGSU], so it was a great game for us. Now we've got to step back...learn from this, because we didn't play two halves strong, learn from it and be prepared to go into a hostile environment," Cullop said. Next up for Toledo is a road test at Green Bay on November 16th.

Notre Dame Academy alum and Toledo native Patrice Lalor had 10 points and four assists for Dayton.

Before the game the Rockets WNIT Championship banner from last season was unveiled in the rafters to a thunderous applause from the 3,467 fans in attendance.
