As temperatures dip into the single digits and below, the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio wants to remind the public that their facilities act as heating centers for older adults who need a place to warm up.

The Office on Aging has 24 centers in 10 counties:  Williams, Lucas, Fulton, Ottawa, Wood, Erie, Defiance, Henry, Paulding and Sandusky. Emilie Owens, emergency coordinator, says each office will stay open during their normal business hours everyday, severe weather pending.

"The centers close based on school closings, otherwise they're open and act as a place where people can go and warm up. We don't check IDs to make sure people are over 60 and won't turn anyone away, but our facilities primarily serve older adults," she said.

To keep seniors safe during the cold, the Office on Aging recommends for older adults to stay inside when wind chills fall below zero. If you must go out, the office says to dress in layers and wear a hat, since 40 percent of body heat is lost from the head. Also, drink warm beverages, not alcohol. It narrows blood vessels and can promote frostbite and hypothermia, according to the Office on Aging.
