One out of 10 teen drivers say they have driven while drunk on New Year's Eve, according to a new survey by Liberty Mutual Insurance. It's the worst holiday night of the year for driving after drinking, they say. The 4th of July is in second place.

The survey of nearly 2,300 11th and 12th graders also found a large majority, 94%, of teen drivers say that they would stop driving under the influence of alcohol or marijuana if asked by a passenger. Some 87% of teen passengers say they would ask a peer to stop driving after drinking. That's more than marijuana, which was 72%.

Stephen Wallace, senior adviser at Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD) says that to avoid a fatal start to the new year, teen passengers need to use their voices if they have concerns about their friends' behaviors.

Liberty Mutual and SADD say teens are less likely to drive drunk when parents lay down concrete ground rules.

And considering that New Year's Day is consistently the year's deadliest day for alcohol-related fatalities, AAA has announced its support of ignition interlocks for all convicted DUI offenders, and offers important safety advice to partygoers.

1. Always plan ahead to designate a non-drinking driver before any party or celebration begins.

2. Never get behind the wheel of a car when you've been drinking alcohol - even after just one drink.

3. Never ride as a passenger in a car driven by someone who has been drinking alcohol - even after just one drink.

4. Do not hesitate to take the keys from friends or family members who may be impaired.

5. Call a taxi for a friend in need.

6. Be a responsible host in reminding guests to stay safe and always offer alcohol-free beverages.

7. If you encounter an impaired driver on the road, keep a safe distance and ask a passenger to call 911.

8. Remember that prescription, over-the-counter medications and illegal drugs also can impair your ability to drive safely.
