Christmas and the holiday season is a time when many families will get together to set up the tree and string the lights, but it does have it's dangers.

Before setting up the ladder and pulling out the box of decorations, consider taking some safety measure first.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration website more than "150 home fires involving holiday lights and other decorative lighting occur each year. Together, these fires result in 21 deaths and $25.2 million in direct property damage."

The experts over at Lowes Hardware have some tips for those setting up there lights this weekend.

You should always inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up.

Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe. Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Make sure to periodically check the wires. If they are warm to the touch you should take them down and unplug them.

Experts also advise that all decorations be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from heat vents. If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is also flame retardant.

Fire officials say if you are using a real tree try not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks. The tree stand should be filled with water at all times.
