Toledo police have released more information about the man shot and killed during a struggle with police early Friday.
Just after 2 a.m., police received a report of a man breaking into a vehicle at the 1300 block of N. Michigan St. According to the police statement, 19-year-old Darrell James Parnell was confronted by officers and resisted arrest at 2:22 a.m. A foot pursuit ensued and when one of the officers caught up to Parnell, he began to assault the officer, according to the release.
Police report that the officer sustained serious injuries. He fired one round at Parnell, striking him in the chest. Parnell was pronounced dead at the scene and the officer was taken by Life Squad to the hospital.
The officer has been treated and released, according to the report.
Toledo police will hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. to answer questions regarding the incident.

Toledo police report a man who tried to break into a car in North Toledo and got into a physical struggle with police died after an officer shot him early Friday.
Police received reports of a man breaking into a Jeep parked near North Michigan and Mulberry Street around 2:09 a.m. An officer arrived to the scene around 2:22 a.m. WNWO originally reported police received calls about the incident at 3:30 a.m. and responded at 4 a.m.
Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said the officer chased the suspect after a physical struggle where the officer was injured. The officer then fired one round at the suspect in an open lot between two houses. WNWO originally reported the officer could not keep up with the suspect during the foot pursuit, but according to Sgt. Heffernan, that information was incorrect.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was injured during the struggle and transported to the hospital, but police say he is expected to be OK.
