Today marks the eleventh anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Numerous events are planned to honor those lost that day, nationally and here at home.
At the World Trade Center site, moments of silence will be held starting at 8:46 a.m., the exact time the first plane struck the first tower. The names of the victims will be read aloud by family members, as well. At the Pentagon, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony with remarks by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. And near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, Vice President Joe Biden will join the memorial service.
Taking a look at some of the events happening in our area:
Owens Community College invites residents to join students and staff today to pay tribute to the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. Beginning at 9 a.m., individuals can view the memorial display, which includes a complete name listing of those that perished 11 years ago. Visitors will also have the chance to leave their own messages. The documentary film "102 Minutes That Changed America" will also run throughout the day until 4 p.m. All events will take place at the Toledo-area Campus on Oregon Road.
Monroe County Community College's Whitman Center will host a presentation today from local individuals who went to New York City and provided volunteer assistance after 9/11. Also, an exhibit on loan from the New York State Museum, featuring rare artifacts from the World Trade Center, will be on display. The presentation is free and open to the public and is from 7 until 9 p.m. tonight at the center in Temperance.
Notre Dame Academy and St. Ursula Academy will be "battling it out" to see who can collect the most pints of blood in their 9/11 Blood Battle. The blood donation challenge is being held in remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Starting today through September 20th, any member of the community is encouraged to stop by the American Red Cross Toledo Donor Center on Executive Parkway to donate for the school of your choice.
And this morning, Toledo Fire and Rescue will dedicate the new Fire Station No. 6. It will begin with a commemoration of the events of September 11, 2001, honoring all those lost that day, especially the loss of 343 fellow firefighters. That event will take place at 9:30 a.m. this morning at the station on Oak Street.
