TOLEDO -- The City of Toledo presented a plan Thursday to resuscitate the land of demolished Southwyck Mall.
The proposed plan will turn the 55 acre property into a sports complex that includes retail stores and a hotel. The sports complex design includes an ice rink, basketball and volleyball courts as well as a soccer venue and water park. Mayor Mike Bell emphasized the project is in just in the beginning stages. Developers MJW Inc. hopes the new Southwyck sports complex will hold state and regional sports tournaments.
“Basically it is a community center that specializes in sports that has the commercial retail element." Project Consultant Dan Pritt said.
MJW has agreed with a price for the land with the current owners of Southwyck. The developing company is asking Toledo City Council to approve a 50-thousand dollar loan for more research on the proposal. If council approves, MJW will present a concrete plan late 2012. They anticipate the project would take between 2 and 10 years to finish.
Southwyck Mall demolition was completed on January 23, 2009; the mall ceased operations June 29, 2008.
