While e-book readers may have cut into the market for the printed word, they have not put an end to books altogether.

Quite the opposite, according to new research by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

The study found e-book users had read an average of 24 books in the previous 12 months, while people using traditional books read 15. About 21 percent of American adults told Pew that they had read an e-book in the past year. The number rises to 43 percent of Americans age 16 and older when you include reading an e-book or a long-form magazine, journal or news article on an e-book reader, tablet or cell phone.
