MOUNT CLEMENS, MICH. (AP) -- A Detroit-area man has been sentenced to probation in the death of his 360-pound wife, who authorities say was allowed to fester in a bed surrounded by her own waste.
A Macomb County Circuit judge ordered Michael Brooks on Wednesday to serve two years' probation and undergo a psychological evaluation as well as random drug testing. He pleaded guilty in January to abusing a vulnerable adult.
Yolanda Reese-Brooks died of morbid obesity and other injuries in October.
Prosecutors say guidelines called for a 10- to 23-month prison sentence. Judge Peter Maceroni rejected incarcerating Brooks because he had no prior record and was involved with his wife for two decades.
Prosecutors say Brooks was his 40-year-old wife's primary caretaker after a 2011 auto crash crushed her pelvis and ruptured her bladder.
