TOLEDO -- Officials at the University of Toledo aimed to inform the public and clear up details Thursday morning after a fatal stabbing on campus overnight.

Campus authorities say, along with Toledo Police, they continue to investigate the stabbings that occurred at the International House around 9 p.m. Wednesday. One student suffered fatal wounds, another is being treated for injuries sustained from multiple stab wounds.

At a press conference Thursday morning, UT's VP of External Affairs, Larry Burns, told reporters, "Our faculty, our staff, are deeply saddened by what occurred." He said officials at the university feel the campus is very safe and that this was an unfortunate, isolated incident between two students that escalated and resulted in a tragic outcome. "The campus is very safe, but unfortunately, these kinds of things occur...we are always looking at ways to make things safer, better."

UT Chief of Police, Jeff Newton, likened the incident, which occurred in a stairwell inside the dorm, to a domestic dispute with a violent outcome. "This is the type of incident that can happen anywhere," Newton told reporters. He said there are currently no plans for any charges to be filed as they are still in the early stages of their investigation.

When UTPD arrived on the scene Wednesday they found the first individual injured from apparent stab wounds outside the front of International House. A second individual, who also was injured with apparent stab wounds, was found outside International House and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Names of the students involved in the incident are expected to be released Thursday.

University officials sent out a warning to faculty, staff, and students, Wednesday night, after reports of a "dangerous situation". The dormitory on the university's Bancroft campus typically houses hundreds of students but the school is currently on winter break.

Burns says the university will use social media to communicate with faculty, staff, and students following this incident.

The school's Department of Residence Life is working to find alternate housing for displaced International House residents for the remained of Winter Break. Students go back to class at UT on Jan. 7.
