TOLEDO -- Three children killed on Monday afternoon in an apparent murder-suicide in West Toledo were all students at Whiteford Elementary School.

10-year-old Paige Hayes, 6-year-old Logan Hayes and 5-year-old Madalyn Hayes died at their grandmother's residence on Harvest Lane in West Toledo.

Sylvania Schools superintendent Dr. Brad Rieger said students were given the news when they arrived at school Tuesday morning.  "Once we got them in the classroom the teachers got them to sit on the floor in a circle and the teachers gave them the news that we had lost three of our friends," Dr. Rieger said.

Toledo resident Jonie Segura went to the house where the murder-suicide happened and laid a teddy bear on the steps leading to a side door.  "I just felt compelled to come and I couldn't even sleep all night saying prayers for those three children," Ms. Segura said.

Dr. Rieger said grief counselors were at  Whiteford to talk to students and staff members and that students spoke to each other about each of their fallen classmates.  "The kids did an activity where they did a poster making remembrances of our three students," Dr. Rieger said.

A fund has been set up to help the family.  Donations can be made to the "Hayes Children Memorial Fund" at any PNC Bank.
