MONROE, MICH. -- Authorities have released the identity of a Monroe mother fatally struck by a distracted driver at her child’s bus stop Friday morning.
Shelly Marie Deaton was waiting in front of her home with her daughter for a school bus to arrive when she was hit by a car driven by a 17-year-old Monroe High School student.
Investigators say the driver was reaching for a water bottle when the teen lost control of the vehicle. The car left the road and went up onto grass, eventually striking Deaton, 42.
The teen has not been identified. The teen’s sister was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Neither were hurt.
Police say Deaton’s 14-year-old daughter did not witness the incident.
