TOLEDO -- On January 3 of this year, 81-year-old Fannie Mae Smith was sitting in her living room watching television when a barrage of bullets fired from outside the residence tore through her home. Smith died a short time later at the hospital.

But eight and a half months later, the case remains unsolved much to the dismay of her son, James Smith.

"It's been sad; my mother was the most important person in my life and I still can't believe it," he said.

Toledo Police detective Jay Gast says the case is still open, but that police are getting few leads these days.

"I think the combination of the time of day and the fact it was in the winter there were not a lot of witnesses and there has just not been a lot of leads provided to us," Detective Gast said.

Anyone with information on the shooting death of Fannie Mae Smith should call Crime Stopper at 419-255-1111.
