MAUMEE -- The grills are blazin' as the 29th annual Northwest Ohio Rib-Off is underway at the Lucas County Fairgrounds in Maumee.

Rib-masters from Ohio to New Jersey are offering up their lip-smackin' and award winning BBQ fare. Festival-goers will be able to vote on their favorites in several categories.

"We're here at the Rib-Off trying to go for a two-peat," said Trevor Deeter of Deets's BBQ in Maumee, the local and overall champion of 2011. "We'll see if we can bring home some trophies."

Butch's Barbecue of New Jersey made the journey to offer "award-winning ribs to the masses," said Joe Russell as he slathered a rack with a signature sweet and salty sauce. "It absolutely pops in your mouth," said Russell. "It's fantastic."

Country music artist Phil Vassar is scheduled to perform on Friday, followed by the "Motor City Madman" Ted Nugent on Saturday. The grilling will continue through Sunday. The festival also offers amusement park rides, funnel cakes and other concessions.
