Parishioners are celebrating as the Cleveland Catholic Diocese has reopened three more of the 11 churches that were closed but later spared by the Vatican.
CLEVELAND (AP) --
The Plain Dealer
reports two churches in Cleveland and one in suburban Bedford reopened Sunday, bringing the total to five.
The 11 churches were among 50 closed or merged by Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon because of declining congregations, finances and priests. The Vatican sided with parishioners who appealed and said the closings weren't done properly.
Four churches have scheduled reopening dates in the next few weeks.
One of the churches without a reopening date is waiting to be assigned a pastor. The other is the former home of a congregation that broke away from the diocese and moved to a commercial building.
