TOLEDO -- As Memorial Day approaches, veteran patients from the Toledo State Hospital buried in nameless graves will be memorialized at an upcoming ceremony on Saturday, May 19.

At 11 a.m., the fifth annual Veteran's Memorial Program will begin at Old Cemetery off Arlington Avenue, where more than 900 former patients are buried.

Veterans in the cemetery will be honored through dedication of a newly installed flag pole, 21 gun salute, roll call and taps. The Patriot Guard Riders will provide a motorcycle escort from Arlington Avenue to the New Cemetery, which is located on the University of Toledo Health Science Campus, where an additional 1,100 former patients, including veterans, lay in peace off East Medical Loop.

The event honors the state hospital patients buried in numbered and nameless graves, including veterans from as far back as the Civil War. For many decades, people with a variety of disabilities, including mental illness, developmental disabilities, addictions, traumatic stress disorders, injuries and medical conditions, received treatment at Toledo State Hospital

A reception at Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital will follow the program. For more information, contact the NAMI of Greater Toledo office at (419)-473-1119.
