TOLEDO -- Washington Local Schools' accelerated math students tested their mental strength in a weight-bearing bridge building contest for University of Toledo's High School Engineering Day.

The event allowed students to exlpore engineering as a career, the educational requirements to get the job, and how they use math to complete tasks. The eighth graders rotated among three stations to participate in hands-on activities that apply engineering principles.

Washington Local Schools is rapidly building a reputation for developing promising engineering students. Whitmer has won the UT High School Engineering Design Competition for five consecutive years, and several Whitmer students, including 2011 valedictorian Ron Sutter, have chosen to enroll in UT’s College of Engineering.
