BERLIN TWP., MICH. -- A 17-year-old boy and his 11-year-old sister died at the scene of a traffic crash at Labo Road on Wednesday night.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office reports that Iris Wagenaar, 18, was operating a 1994 Buick LaSabre northbound on the U.S. Turnpike at a high rate of speed. Wagenaar then lost control of the vehicle and crossed the centerline into the southbound lane, colliding with a Chevrolet Trailblazer operated by Andrea Rose, 43.
Both vehicles came to rest in a farm field on the west side of U.S. Turnpike.
Peter and 14-year-old Harley Wagenaar were ejected from vehicle during the crash. Iris and 11-year-old sister Morgan Wagenaar were the only occupants wearing seatbelts.
Both Peter and Morgan died at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash. Iris and Harley were transported to South Shore Hospital for treatment and are listed in critical condition.
Rose was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to South Shore Hospital, where she was treated and released for minor injuries. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Deputy Jeremy Peters at 734-240-7735.
