OREGON -- Two weeks after WNWO aired a story about a former puppy mill dog battling cancer in Fremont, her family is happy to announce that Sweetie Pie is recovering from her surgery.

Foster mom Beth Risenburg and members of the Save Sweetie Pie Facebook group raised more than $1,000 for the surgery thanks to donations coming into the Sandusky County Humane Society from across the country and a $500 grant from Petco.

Dr. Alan Kao of the Oregon Animal Hospital performed the surgery on Tuesday morning. He removed numerous tumors linked to her skin and breast cancers.

At her two week check up, the animal hospital will be able to determine what further care Sweetie may need.

Maureen Spaulding, Risenburg's mother, is hopeful that they will be able to return some of the donations to SCHS to help the other hoarding case dogs rescued with Sweetie Pie.

"We are happy, very happy to say it may be a few hundred dollars and we can't thank Dr. Kao and the wonderful staff at Oregon Animal Hospital for helping Sweetie Pie our family and all while keeping the financial issues in mind," Spaulding wrote in the Save Sweetie Pie Facebok group. "I think they are as happy as we are at being able to give back some of the funds to help the other survivors!"

Anyone interested in donating to the Humane Society of Sandusky County to help the other hoarding case dogs should contact (419)-334-4517.
