TOLEDO, OH -- It will be the Tuesday of the first full week of May. And for some parts of Toledo, Lucas County, and Northwest Ohio, that means it's election day.
Voters in Toledo City Council District 4 will be deciding on an interim councilman. Councilman Michael Ashford resigned from the seat in December to take the seat to which he was elected in the Ohio House of Representatives. Toledo City Council Democrats appointed Paula Hicks-Hudson -- a veteran of state and local government -- to the seat to occupy it until the May election.
Hicks-Hudson, the endorsed Democrat, is being challenged by Alfonso Narvaez, the endorsed Republican and by perennial candidate, Terry Shankland who has run for the district seat and at-large seats in the past.
The winner of that contest will then have to run for the seat again in September if they want to continue on council. In September, Lucas County holds non-partisan primary elections. The top two finishers, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the November ballot. In November, someone will be elected to a full, four year term as the city councilman for District 4.
Voters in the city of Sylvania will decide on a 4.9 mills operating levy for their schools. Sylvania schools laid off personnel and made cuts in the district to confront a $5.5 million operating deficit.
Maumee voters will vote on an $5.9 million operating levy for Maumee Public Schools.
Polls in Lucas County are open from 6:30 AM -- 7:00 PM.
Voters in the Benton-Carroll-Salem Local School District will vote on a 3.9 mill operating levy. In Port Clinton, the mayor, city auditor, and city council are on the primary ballot.
Voters in Findlay will also choose a new mayor. Although it is a primary election, with no Democrat on the ballot, Republican voters will choose between four Republicans including incumbent Pete Sehnhert.
