TOLEDO, OH -- The icy conditions are to blame for many fender benders and school closures Wednesday.
Freezing rain moved out of the area by mid-morning Wednesday, leaving hundreds of local roads and sidewalks ice-covered.
Police say a woman lost control of her car at Reynolds and Hill around 4:00 a.m., spinning into the intersection and hitting a pick-up truck. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the truck was not hurt.
Road conditions were so icy in the morning hours, that Toledo Police temporarily closed I-75 North at the 475-East split. Police said traffic was moving slowly on I-280 near I-75.
With roadways, sidewalks and parking lots covered in ice, hundreds of schools and learning centers in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan cancelled classes Wednesday. It marked the first calamity day of the year for Toledo Public Schools. Sylvania, Maumee, Perrysburg, Monroe, Adrian, Anthony Wayne, Springfield and many other districts also closed.
Severe weather has tapered off for the remainder of the day Wednesday; however, another round of snow arrives Thursday. One to three inches of snow locally, with the higher amounts in the southern viewing area, are expected to fall by Thursday night.
