TOLEDO, OHIO -- Vandals are to blame for dozens of damaged grave markers at Toledo Calvary Cemetery.
The Catholic Diocese of Toledo, which runs the West Toledo cemetery, says vandals wreaked havoc across the graveyard over the weekend. At least 25 gravestones were toppled or broken.
Diocese officials believe a group of people are responsible because some of the grave markers weigh upwards of 600 pounds.
"This is so disheartening to us because it's just so sad that people feel they have to do this if they're getting some kind of cheap thrill out of it or something," said Sally Oberski, Communications Director of the Catholic Diocese of Toledo.
Living relatives should be able to cover the cost of repairs through homeowners insurance. The diocese will make up all other losses.
This is the second time this fall that the cemetery has dealt with the problem.
"There is a sense that if somebody has gotten away with this more than once or twice, they're going to start talking to friends about it and we'll be posting some information about now to contact Crimestoppers--we need the public's help to try to get this crime solved," said Oberski.
