TOLEDO, OHIO -- Toledo Police are asking residents to be aware of a deceiving group of crooks believed to be behind several burglaries at homes throughout the city.
The suspects, described as two males and one female, are said to approach the homes of elderly victims claiming to be from the water department of gas company. The suspects are said to be very polite while talking their way into the homes to "look for leaks" inside. Once inside the homes, the group splits up and steals money and jewelry while keeping the residents distracted.
Victims and their neighbors have described the suspects as wearing coveralls or uniform-type clothing giving them the appearance of city workers. They have also been seen driving either a red car, blue minivan or blue full-size van with no markings.
In the most recent case, the suspects were described as two males, one in his 40's with greasy mixed dark and gray hair and another about 20-years-old.
Toledo Police say residents should keep the doors to their homes locked. If anyone comes to your door claiming to be a water department or gas company employee, check to make sure their vehicle has a clearly marked City of Toledo or gas company seal. Water department and Columbia Gas employees should all also have visible identification.
Columbia Gas is telling residents who are unsure of a gas worker's identification, or to verify work being done in and around the home, to call Columbia's emergency response telephone line at 800-344-4077.
If you have any information regarding these crimes you are asked to contact Toledo Police Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
