FINDLAY -- Thursday is inspection day for the engines at Fire Station One in Findlay.

The only reason Chris Saldana,34, and Brian Smith,32, are doing this or any other firefighting related job, is because Issue 5 passed.

A couple months ago, the two were looking at very different circumstances when the city sent them and 16 other firefighters notices saying that because of a 5 million dollar budget shortfall, they were going to be laid off.

For Chris the timing was terrible.

His wife just lost her job a few months earlier and she had just given birth to their first child.

“It's kind of a grueling situation to put yourself through knowing you actually have to find another career path, maybe, possibly,” said Saldana.

Brian has a very similar story.

He has a wife, one kid and another on the way.

“You're gonna lose a job that you love, but have no control over whether you keep it or not, I mean it's very frustrating,” said Smith.

After they received word of the upcoming layoffs, the two hit the streets trying to educate residents on what the passing of Issue 5 would mean.

It was a tough sell knowing that if the Issue passed, people would be saying yes to an income tax increase, but on Election Day, with 53% of the vote, the Issue passed.

Saldana, Smith and the other 16 firefighters learned they will be able to keep doing what they do every Thursday, inspect the engines that keep Findlay safe.
