Ohio drivers are closer to cruising at 70 mph on rural interstate highways now that the proposal to increase state speed limits has cleared the senate.

Wednesday’s vote of 27 to 6 comes after a legislative panel ironed out discrepancies between the house and senate versions of the bill, according to the Associated Press..

The measure would also set maximum speed limits for interstate freeways at 65 mph in urban areas and 55 mph for congested areas. Gov. John Kasich's proposal to sell $1.5 billion in bonds from the Ohio Turnpike is also part of the bill. At least 90 percent of money made from the sale of bonds would go toward road construction projects in the state.

The AP reports the bill will likely pass Thursday when it heads back to the house for review.
