TOLEDO -- A Sylvania man is behind bars on an 8-year-old arrest warrant for three counts of raping a teen girl in Baldwin County, Ala.

According to U.S. Marshals, 54-year-old Cheeley Andrew Hunter was arrested and charged with rape in Alabama, but fled the state before his trial. He had been on the run since 2005.

The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force reports they recently received information that Hunter was in the area, but his exact whereabouts were unknown. Through an extensive search of databases, the task force determined that Hunter was living at a residence on Central Avenue in Sylvania.

Around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities surrounded the home and took Hunter into custody without incident.

“This is a classic case of the perseverance and determination of the U.S. Marshals to apprehend fugitives for serious crimes,“ U.S. Marshal Peter J. Elliot said. “Hunter was on the run for 8 years and was found several states away.  This truly is a case of you can run all you want, but you can't hide.”

According to a press release, Hunter’s criminal history includes convictions for narcotics and burglary. He is currently in the Lucas County jail awaiting extradition to Alabama.
