If you travel on US-23, prepare to slow down for construction for a few weeks.
The Michigan Department of Transportation will resume construction along US-23 in southern Monroe County on Monday, weather permitting. Crews will begin placing a barrier wall along southbound US-23, requiring a single-lane closure in each direction. Once the barrier wall is in place, northbound US-23 traffic will shift to the southbound side of US-23, with one lane of traffic open in each direction. This traffic plan is expected to be in place until late May.
In addition, signal work also is expected to begin at Sterns Road on March 4. There will be shoulder closures in effect during this work, with minimal impact on ramp traffic.
In mid-March, work will begin on US-223, with one lane of traffic open in each direction. The entrance ramp to southbound US-23 also will be closed at this time, for a total of 14 days. A detour will be posted.
Additional ramp work will take place later this summer, along with work at the Welcome Center.
Improvements include reconstructing northbound US-23 between Sterns Road and US-223, repairing pavement on southbound US-23 between School Road and the Ohio state line, adding roundabouts at the US-23/US-223 interchange, reconstructing the ramps at Sterns Road and Consear Road and repairing pavement at the Dundee Welcome Center off northbound US-23.
