TOLEDO -- The Toledo School Board is accepting applications for an interim superintendent to succeed Dr. Jerome Pecko who will leave the district July31st.

Board President Brenda Hill says the board is not worried about finding a permanent replacement, instead they need a temporary interim superintendent.

As their search begins, they're looking from within. 20 people currently employed by TPS are qualified for the job who have a superintendents license.

"There are a lot of things that a new person will to go through and might not want to come if they see they have all these hurdles," explains Hill.

Whoever takes the top job will be dealing with the aftermath of the attendance scrubbing scandal, and improving the districts poor performance which was laid out in a statewide report card on Wednesday.

"I would say if they're internal, then they have a knowledge of what's going on already. If they're external, they have to come in and they have to learn," says Hill.

Whether the interim superintendent is new or comes from within the district, the job is not guaranteed to lead to a permanent spot. Board President Brenda Hill knows what she's looking for in a new leader, "my qualities would be someone who is dependable, someone who is energetic, someone who has vision, someone who can see plans for the beginning to the end and someone who really has a passion for our students and our school system."

The deadline to apply for the interim spot is March 22nd.
