TOLEDO -- The Federal Highway Administration sent a letter to the Ohio Department of Transportation ordering a cessation of the Collingwood Avenue construction project.  The letter signed by Laura S. Leffler, the Ohio Division Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration, states "we have become aware of outstanding issues involving compliance with the environmental commitments contained in the documentation for the project."

In the last several weeks over a dozen trees have been cut down along Collingwood Avenue.  The tree cutting has been ordered to stop pending a 15 day review by the Federal Highway Administration.  Old West End residents welcome the intervention by the feds.  Bill Hill has lived in the neighborhood for 12 years.  "One of the beauties of Collingwood Avenue is that it is beautifully arched by those trees and it is the entrance to an historic neighborhood and we hate to see that entrance destroyed," Mr. Hill said.

Other residents have complained that there has not been sufficient public input.  Despite that David Dysard, planning administrator with the city Division of Engineering Services, says there will be no public meetings on the Collingwood project during this 15 day review period.
