COLUMBUS, OHIO (AP) --

Ohio's largest university is trying to raise $100 million from the community to pay for scholarships for needy and high-achieving students from throughout the Buckeye State.

Ohio State University is kicking off the scholarship challenge Friday with some high-profile chairmen - football coach Urban Meyer and basketball coach Thad Matta.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the effort is part of a larger university effort to raise $500 million in private donations for student financial aid and scholarships as part of the Columbus school's $2.5 billion fundraising campaign introduced in October.

A year's tuition to Ohio State is $10,037 for in-state students. Last year, the university awarded about $462 million in financial aid to undergraduates. Nearly three-quarters of all OSU undergrads received some sort of aid.
