HOLLAND -- A standoff at a home along Airport Highway in Springfield Township came to an end Friday afternoon.

Police responded to the home, in the 7000-block of Airport Highway, between Timberwolf Drive and Albon Road, around 9 a.m. They say a man had barricaded himself inside the home and they believed him to be armed.

A bomb squad had arrived at the scene by mid-day; however, police did not confirm what weapons or explosives they suspected to be inside the home.

After a six hour standoff, authorities used tear gas to gain access to the home. The man inside the home was removed and transported from the scene.

Authorities at the scene told WNWO that the man was earlier involved in a crash and arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was later released and his wife took him home, where he barricaded himself.

Most family members at the scene refused to comment; however, one family member who wishes to remain anonymous did tell WNWO that the man is in his 20's and has never exhibited signs of mental illness and has never been in trouble with the law. Police at the scene say the man was threatening suicide in the home.

As of about 4:00 p.m., Airport Highway was reopened to traffic.
