A Lucas County jail corrections officer is facing criminal charges after an inmate accused him of assault.

The Lucas County Sheriff's Department says it launched an investigation after an inmate, Francisco Cortez, filed a complaint that he was beaten by corrections officer Jacob Kurth back in December.

The sheriff's office says surveillance video shows Kurth beating Cortez after the inmate refused to return to lock up. According to the court document, Cortez suffered injuries to his mouth and face.

Kurth has been charged with assault and is due in court Feb. 1.

As for Cortez, he's behind bars on a charge of vehicular homicide.
