TOLEDO -- Cargo traffic at the Port of Toledo lagged 13 percent behind last year's numbers, according to new statistics from the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority.
In 2011, ships loaded or unloaded more than 11.5 tons of cargo in Toledo. But fewer shipments of coal, petroleum and dry bulk items like salt brought cargo traffic down to 10 million tons last year.
The port authority’s director of cargo development told The Blade that the demand for salt tanked during Toledo's unusually warm winter. The decrease in coal shipments was attributed to stricter pollution regulations that require plants to use the fossil fuel less, The Blade reports.
The stats weren't all bad news, however--Grain shipments increased more than 36 percent from 2011.
