It's a board game many of us have grown up with...and have passed on to the next generation...and the next.

And despite its varying editions, ranging from individual cities, to Betty Boop and "A Christmas Story"...the essential elements of the game have remained the same.

But that is about to change.

Hasbro is holding an online vote to permanently replace one of the iconic game pieces players use to mark their spot on the board.

It is currently taking place on the game's Facebook page.

Up until now, those game pieces have always been the same: the race car, iron, Scottie dog, wheelbarrow, shoe, top hat, thimble, or battleship.

Depending on how people vote, one will forever vanish from the game.

The replacement candidates include: a toy robot, helicopter, cat, guitar, or diamond ring.

Monopoly hopes to capitalize on their big change long enough to sell a “Golden Token” limited edition Monopoly set that will be the last edition to include the classic tokens as well as the five ones.

The first game to have the shifted lineup will debut in late summer.

And don't think you're alone if your favorite icon gets the axe.

“There’s a love affair with the token that each player has settled on over time. It’s very seldom that you see a player not care about what token represents them on the game board,”  a Monopoly expert who’s written three books on the game tells USA Today.

Why is Monopoly inflicting this pain on us? Because whatever doesn’t change can’t move forward and people get bored with routine. It’s an attempt to freshen the brand, says the vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming.
