MONROE, MICH. -- Monroe Public Schools announced on Thursday that they would be cancelling classes for Friday, Dec. 21 after rumors that have led to concerns for decreased school attendance.

The district says they are aware of rumors spreading in social media circles that are calling into question school safety. They say while anxiety and disruptions to learning has increased, all rumors are unsubstantiated.

The day off comes exactly one week after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut where 20 students and six teachers were killed. Friday is also the day, according to the Mayan calendar, that many believe to mark the "end of the world."

A storm moving through the Plains and Midwest is expected to dump 1-3 inches of snow across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan by late Friday morning. VIEW LATEST FORECAST

Monroe Public will remain closed through the New Year and will determine if Friday's lost instructional day will need to be made up after receiving a decision from Michigan education officials.

Friday's school closings include Monroe High, Orchard Center High, Monroe Virtual High, Monroe Middle, Arborwood Elementary, Custer Elementary, Manor Elementary, Raisinville Elementary, and Waterloo Elementary.
