Original report:

The man suspected of being behind one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history has been identified as 24-year-old Ryan Lanza.

Authorities say Lanza is responsible for fatally shooting at least 26 people, 20 of which were children, inside a Connecticut elementary school Friday morning.

NBC News has reported that Lanza's mother is a Kindergarten teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School and was among the adults shot in the massacre. That information has not been confirmed, but does offer a connection between Lanza and the Newtown, Connecticut school.

According to police, Lanza wore a mask, bullet-proof vest, and dark clothing when he entered the school around 9:30 a.m. Friday. A call was made to 9-1-1 just a minute later. Reports indicate Lanza opened fire inside his mother's classroom, fatally shooting all of the Kindergarteners inside.

Lieutenant Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police told reporters late Friday afternoon that the shooting was confined to one section of the school, specifically two rooms. He stated that 18 children were found dead inside the school. Two children found shot inside the school were taken to an area hospital where they were later pronounced dead. Six adults were fatally shot at the school.

Lanza was shot and killed inside the school by police. His younger brother, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, is being held by authorities. Reports indicate Adam was seen leaving the school around the time of the shooting.

Reports also indicate another adult was fatally shot inside the home of Lanza's parents in Newtown.

An emotional Pres. Barack Obama spoke to reporters gathered at the White House Friday afternoon. "Our hearts are broken today," the President said wiping away tears. "We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action."
