On Saturday, SJJ students tested their robot in a mock-competition scrimmage against a robotics team from Benjamin-Logan High School in Bellefontaine.
TOLEDO -- The robotics team at St. John’s Jesuit High School is gearing up to compete in the First Tech Challenge next month in Cleveland.
The team of ten, who call themselves the “Broken Axels,” are engineering a remote-controlled robot that can achieve programmed challenges. On Saturday, the students tested their robot in a mock-competition scrimmage against a robotics team from Benjamin-Logan High School in Bellefontaine.
On January 5, students will compete in First Tech Challenge’s Ring it Up! Teams of two will gain points for completing various tasks with their robot, including placing rings on raised podiums, and even up-ending their opponent. Robots will battle on a 12’ x 12’ diamond shaped field.
The program at SJJ has made great strides in the years following its inception.
“It’s not Lego robots anymore,” said Robotics Team Coach, Rob Holman. “It’s high-level, multi-sensor, multi-motor, multi-servo, high end computer programming.”
Holman and students have dedicated several hours each week since September to get the robot ready for competition.
