American families look forward to gathering around the turkey on Thanksgiving, but a lot of that turkey will go uneaten. And we mean, a lot.

According to the USDA, 35 percent of perfectly good turkey meat does not get eaten after it's purchased for the day of thanks. And according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, this Thanksgiving alone, an estimated $282 million worth of uneaten turkey will end up in the trash, not in stomachs.

This contributes to the $165 billion in uneaten food that Americans waste every year.
