Bedford High School theatre students show acts of music and drama on the stage, and acts of kindness behind the scenes.

The students will head to New York City over the Thanksgiving weekend, and before they do so, they're collecting items to bring to victims of Hurricane Sandy. They'll deliver the supplies in Hoboken, New Jersey.

"I feel like I need to go there myself and hand out blankets or warm bowls of soup or toothbrushes or toothpaste," Bedford High School junior Hunter Clark said.

Seven students and six adults will make the trip, which was planned earlier this year before the superstorm hit. The theatre students planned to experience Broadway.

"When the hurricane came, I was thinking what could we do to let the students maybe have this opportunity to give back while they're there," said Leslie Gamble, mother of one of the theatre students.

Theatre and choral director Mark Smith says they'll still enjoy Broadway shows, but he hopes his students will see more than song and dance.

"It's going to be Thanksgiving, and we're going to make this transaction and a day of being thankful for what we have, and thankful for what we can do for those people, too," Smith said.

Students say they look forward to the moment they're able to change a life.

"I hope it shows that we're not just taking everything for granted, that we actually care about people," freshman Sarah Matlow said.

If you'd like to donate items for the students to take to Sandy victims, you can drop them off during school hours through Tuesday, Nov. 20. For a complete supply list and more ways to help, check out www.bhstheatrearts.com, or contact Mark Smith at mark.smith@bedford.k12.mi.us.
